About BIA Advocacy

Hawaii’s construction industry is one of the top economic drivers in the State and any disruption to the industry has far reaching consequences for our overall economy. The construction industry creates jobs, opportunities for investment, and indirectly supports dozens of related industries from suppliers to mom-and-pop operations. One large-scale construction project may directly provide employment for hundreds and thousands of individuals, resulting in a rippling positive effect on the rest of the economy.

Proposed legislation and policies could potentially have a tremendous impact on our construction industry – excessive land use regulations and entitlement requirements, prolonged permit processes, overly strict building codes, and unnecessary mandates and requirements – all of which ends up increasing the costs of construction and, ultimately, costs to the consumer.

As a member-driven organization, one of the valuable resources the BIA provides is representation in government at the federal, state, and municipal levels. This is accomplished through the BIA Government Relations Office, a critical and core function of BIA. BIA’s Government Relations Committee (GRC), comprised of member-volunteers, is empowered with the essential tools and knowledge necessary for direct involvement in the legislative and regulatory processes at all levels of government. The GRC works closely with staff to monitor and testify on hundreds of bills affecting the construction industry, and educating elected officials on the importance of the construction industry.
